The Article Menu
Previous Microplanet Gravity Next |
Post (P) Create a new USENET article. The destination newsgroup defaults to the currently open newsgroup. You can add additional groups from the compose window or select multiple groups from the group pane.
After typing your message in the Posting Article window, choose "Send" - This places your article in the Outbox to be transferred automatically to the news server.
The "Post" command in the newsgroup pane pop-up menu behaves differently. You can select any group in the group pane for posting whether the group is open or not. You can also select multiple groups and all selected groups will be added to the newsgroups: field.
See the Compose, Post, and Follow-up Articles Chapter for details.
Follow Up (F) Create a follow up to a USENET article. The text of the original article appears quoted.
You can use “Selective Quoting” by selecting only part of the article before issuing the command. You can also selectively quote headers (press H first) or signatures, which are normally stripped from the follow-up.
See the Compose, Post, and Follow-up Articles Chapter for details.
Reply (R) Respond by E-MAIL to the author of the article (and optionally cc yourself).
· If you did not set up an SMTP server, this command may not be available.
· The author may be using a munged e-mail address that you need to correct manually. Also, most authors do not want replies e-mailed to them. Most of the time you will follow up to the newsgroup.
· Gravity allows using both a valid e-mail address for e-mail functions and a munged (fake) address for Usenet posts. See the Setup Tab in Server Properties.
Show Full Header (H) If you want to view the entire headers, press the ‘H' key. Pressing ‘H’ again restores the original view.
· You can format the font and color of each displayed header, or add/remove the headers that you want to display (see: Customize Article Appearance and the Article Pane ).
Mute Quoted Text (Q)
This command will collapse and expand the quoted text in the article pane. To undo muting, press “Q” again.
You can control how many lines of the quoted text are shown when text is muted by setting the option on the Tools - Global Options - Article Layout tab.
Show Source
Shows the raw article source text (no encoding applied).
For many of the following commands, you can use the mouse to "drag" over a continuous range of articles by holding down the left mouse button, and then use the command on all the selected articles at once. You can also use more traditional methods of selecting multiple articles (hold Control or Shift).
You can then use the right click menu (your mouse must stay in the selection)
Mark As .. (the following commands are also available in the thread pane right click pop up)
Mark as Read (K)
Mark an article as Read. If your display filter is set to show only unread articles, the article disappears from the display.
Mark as Unread (Ctrl+U)
Mark an article as Unread. This is useful if you want to re-read a particular article or keep it in an “Unread Article” display filter.
Mark as Important (Ctrl+R) Mark an article as Important and sets the important attribute. The important status can also be used in display filters or in rules.
Mark as Normal (Ctrl+O)
Remove the important status of the article
Mark as Protected (Ctrl+L)
Mark an article as protected. A protected article will not be purged and can not be deleted until it is marked "deletable"
· If the body is not stored locally when you protect an article, Gravity will offer to tag the article(s) for body retrieval. You will have to retrieve tagged articles after tagging to fetch the actual article bodies.
· You do not have to fetch the article body to protect it. However, the server may eventually expire the article and the body will not be available.
Mark as Deletable (Ctrl+Shift+L)
Remove the protection on an article. You can then delete or purge the article.
Delete (Del)
Delete an article and its body from your database. If the article was cross-posted to other news groups, and cross post management is enabled for the server, then it is marked Read in all of them.
Ø To delete a protected article you must first mark it deletable
Decode (Ctrl-D)
Decode binary attachments in the selected article(s). If you are decoding an attachment split across several articles, you only need to select any one part.
· By default, the decoded article is placed in the decoding directory set in Tools - Global Options. Open the Image Factory to view the decoded articles, errors, and decode queue.
· See the Binaries Chapter for details.
Decode To … Allows you to override the default decode directory for the current decode job. You can specify another target folder.
View (V)
Decode and view the article (launch it in the configured viewer), or view it, if it is already decoded.
Priority View (Ctrl+Shift+V)
The Priority View command will automatically move the selected article(s) to the top of the Image Factory queued jobs and display it immediately when decoded. This command is useful if you have queued a large number of decode jobs and want to view a specific item without waiting.
· You can use the command even if the article is already in the queue. It is a shortcut for opening the Image Factory window, selecting the item in the Job Queue, and clicking “ Move To Top ”
Manual Decode (Ctrl-M)
Normally, Gravity is intelligent about decoding attachments and can assemble multi-part attachments in the correct order. If this is unsuccessful, you can usually decode the attachment by selecting the articles containing the attachment and choosing Manual Decode.
See the Manual Decode topic for details
Unscramble (ROT-13)
Some articles are scrambled with a simple ROT-13 cipher to prevent you from reading them inadvertently. ROT-13 is not intended as a secure code, but masks possibly offensive humor or just hides a punch line. This command is a toggle (use it again to reverse the effect).
This command unscrambles or scrambles the selected text in the article. If no text is selected, ROT-13 is applied/unapplied to the entire article (in versions before 2.9.x the entire article is always scrambled or unscrambled).
Forward Via Mail
Select one or more articles and forward them by e-mail (optionally copy yourself).
· If you have not set up an SMTP server, this command may not be available. Also, your own SMTP server may reject the article if you are using a fake e-mail address for your primary e-mail.
· Gravity allows using both a valid e-mail address for e-mail functions and a munged (fake) address for Usenet posts. See the Setup Tab in Server Properties .
Save As (Ctrl-S)
Save one or more articles to a plain text file. If only one article is selected, Gravity prompts to save that article. If more than one article is selected, Gravity appends the articles together and saves them to the same file. You can also append to the same file later, without overwriting it.
· Tip: The article headers saved in the text file are the headers visible in the article pane (which you can customize ). If you want to save all headers, press "H" first.
· You can import text messages into some e-mail clients like theBat! if you change the file extension to .msg. However, you must save the full headers (press "H" first).
· Also See the Saving Articles Topic
Tag/Untag for Retrieval (T)
By default, Gravity only downloads the headers for articles. If you want to read off-line, you must download the bodies of the articles separately, unless you set storage options to store bodies. Note that Gravity will not let you tag an article that has a stored local body (what is the point?)
· Tag the articles by pressing the “T” key. Tagged articles show a tag symbol in the thread pane. The command is a toggle: to un-tag, press “T” again. To start retrieving, use the server command "Retrieve tagged articles" or "Retrieve tagged for selected groups"
See the Offline Reading Chapter for more about tagging
Cancel Article
Cancel an article that you have posted in error. You can only cancel articles you have authored. If the article has already propagated beyond the entry server, canceling will not work. Not all servers honor cancels.
If the article has not been sent, you can simply delete it from the Outbox . However, posting happens automatically (if you are online), so do it fast. It may help to disconnect from the server immediately if you want to stop sending. Then go to the Outbox.
Character Coding
Allows you to try a specific character set for viewing the article.
