Programa transforma fotografias em ambientes virtuais 3D

Pesquisadores da Universidade de Stanford, nos Estados Unidos, desenvolveram um programa de computador que automatiza a tarefa de encontrar os pontos de fuga necessários para a construção de uma imagem tridimensional a partir de uma simples fotografia. Com essa ferramenta, torna-se mais fácil fazer imagens 3D a partir de uma foto.

O novo programa, batizado de Make3D, gera uma imagem tridimensional que pode ser sobrevoada virtualmente. "O algoritmo utiliza várias dicas visuais que os humanos usam para estimar os aspectos 3-D de uma cena," diz o pesquisador Ashutosh Saxena. "Se nós olharmos para um campo gramado, nós podemos ver que a textura muda de uma forma particular à medida em que ela fica mais distante."

O programa está aprimorado para lidar com paisagens e pode ser testado gratuitamente no site da universidade. Os usuários podem enviar suas imagens, que entram em uma fila de processamento. Quando o processamento estiver terminado, o interessado recebe um email e pode visualizar o resultado no próprio site, no formato VRML, ou fazer o download do filme.

O que é melhor: digitalizar uma foto a partir do negativo ou da imagem impressa?
Na teoria, o ideal seria utilizar o negativo, já que ele é a melhor versão da imagem que se pode ter. Só que nem todo scanner suporta esse tipo de mídia (seja em negativos ou slides). E mesmo os que trazem tal facilidade, o resultado nem sempre é satisfatório. Além disso, se você vai digitalizar umas poucas imagens - mesmo que utilize um rolo de negativo inteiro - sempre é mais fácil identificar o que se quer a partir de fotos impressas.

Mas se fizer isso a partir de negativos, utilize a resolução de 2.000 pontos por polegada ou mais, se o dispositivo permitir. Esse tipo de suporte contém muito mais informação do que a presente no material impresso, porém armazenada em um espaço físico muito menor.
