Post a Follow-up to a Usenet Article
Previous Microplanet Gravity Next |
Use one of these commands to post a follow-up to a Usenet article:
· Tool Bar: Follow Up (F) · Menu: Article - Follow Up · Pop up menus in the Article and Thread panes - "Follow up"
Posting a Follow-up is straight forward:
1. Select the article in the thread pane and issue the Follow Up command. Follow-up works in the article pane also (if the body is stored or an article is loaded in the article pane). Gravity will include the quoted text in the compose window and will automatically include all original cross-posted newsgroups in the follow up article. You can remove groups, if needed.
2. Edit the article.
3. Optionally, check Spelling from the Options menu or toolbar button (unless you have set the spell checker to run automatically on send).
4. Send The article is sent to the Outbox.
Tip: You can use selective quoting. That is, if you want to include only part of the original text in the follow up, highlight the section before issuing the Follow Up command. You can also use selective quoting to include headers and signatures in the Follow Up article.
When you SEND a post, it is placed in the Outbox. A background thread polls the Outbox periodically and posts unsent articles. This happens automatically, you do not have to do anything. If you want to stop a SEND, quickly disconnect and go to the Outbox.
See The Compose Window Interface and Options topic for a description of the various posting options.
See Article Attributions and Introductions to set these up.
Strange but True: If you are not connected and try to follow up from the THREAD pane, Gravity will display an error message stating that it can not retrieve the article, or do nothing. However, if the article is currently displayed in the ARTICLE pane, use the right click menu Followup command in the ARTICLE pane and you will be able to compose off-line (the article is still in memory).
Followup-To: poster
When the article contains a "Followup-To: poster" header, Gravity will display a window that gives you the following options.
· Send an e-mail Reply, As Requested
· Post a Follow-up Usenet Message, and e-mail the Author
· I'm Sure I Want to Post a Follow-up Message
Netiquette and Warnings
Gravity will automatically include all original cross posted newsgroups in the follow up article. It is up to you to remove or add groups in the Compose Window, or set a Follow-Up, if appropriate.
Gravity will warn you if your Follow-up consists mostly of quoted text. You can bypass the warning and post anyway.
Gravity will also warn you about excessive cross-posting or your lines are longer than 80 characters. The long lines may be in the quoted material.
However, you should learn about trimming and responding. In general - do not quote an entire large article to respond with a single line, a "Me Too" or a "thank you." Also, do not top post with no trimming (in many groups, top-posting is not welcome at all). The universally accepted response method is to interweave your responses among the relevant quoted text sections.
