The Filter Bar

The Filter Bar is one of Gravity's most useful tool bars.  It provides rapid access to display filters and all filter functions. If you do not see the Filter Bar, go to: View - Toolbars - Filter Bar, and turn the bar on.
The filter bar can be moved by dragging with the mouse. You can "dock" the bar, either on the bottom of the main window, or near the top, under the toolbar (or beside it, if you have space). You can also "float" it off the main window.

The "Filters" button, opens the "Define Display Filter" dialog, where you create, delete, or edit filters, or set the default filter.

The center list box contains the list of available filters. To apply (or refresh) a filter, click the arrow control, select the filter, and it is automatically applied to the current group. The filters are sorted alphabetically. The only way to change the order is to rename the filters with a prefix.

The link icon will link the current filter to the current open newsgroup. You can do the same thing or check results by going to Newsgroup - Properties - Filter, and select "Override Default Filter." Each newsgroup can have its own display filter. When a filter is linked to a newsgroup, it will act as the default filter for that group (this will not work while filters are "locked" of course).   The push pin icon (shown unlocked/locked) "locks"  (or unlocks) the current filter until it is manually changed by the user. In other words, Gravity will not switch filters automatically, but you can change filters manually any time. Use this if you want manual control over filters.
