Remote Desktop (Windows) access from Slackware (Linux)
November 20th, 2010 by Niels Horn in Free Software, Slackware, networking
Windows XP and newer versions have the standard feature of "sharing" access to the desktop from remote computers. This is very easy to set up and no extra software is required on the computer that is sharing or the one that is accessing the desktop - as long as they are both running Windows…
I needed [...]
Snort 2.9.0.1 and daq 0.3 released - Slackware packages available
November 20th, 2010 by Niels Horn in ARMedslack, Barnyard2, Slackware, snort | No Comments »
The beginning of this month a new version of Snort was released - 2.9.0.1. The companion Data Acquisition library (daq) was also upgraded to version 0.3.
I updated my SlackBuilds and installed the new versions on my server. I waited a bit before releasing the packages as there had been some reports on a new "Unknown [...]
LibreOffice Language Packs
October 25th, 2010 by Niels Horn in LibreOffice, Slackware
LibreOffice
So you installed one of the beta versions of LibreOffice and it seems to work fine. But you had OpenOffice.org running in your local language and can't get used to "File", "Tools", etc. menus and want them back in your own language you got used to after all these years.
Language Packs
The Document Foundation does not [...]
Changing the boot logo in Slackware
October 23rd, 2010 by Niels Horn in Slackware, configuration
Is it possible to change the boot logo in Slackware?
This is a question that pops up once in a while on IRC and the forums, and the answer is yes, but there are some little details to take care of.
I made a step-by-step how-to once for myself, so I thought I might as well put [...]
DVDAuthor 0.7.0 released
October 23rd, 2010 by Niels Horn in DVDAuthor, Slackware | No Comments »
Today DVDAuthor 0.7.0 was released.
It has several new options for locale encoding and subtitles. The complete ChangeLog can be read here.
I tested this new version with tovid and DeVeDe, the two front-ends I use for DVDAuthor, and everything worked fine.
The updated SlackBuild has been submitted to SlackBuilds.org and the pre-built packages are available on my [...]
Stuttering sound with Via HDA Intel sound chip
October 19th, 2010 by Niels Horn in Slackware, configuration, kernel | No Comments »
Fixing problems with Linux systems is something I like. I've been in the support business for most of my professional life, and solving a difficult problem still gives me that satisfaction
The system
Recently I upgraded a system that was still running Slackware 13.0. It's a not-so-new system, but should be good enough to serve [...]
LibreOffice 3.3.0_beta2 packages available for Slackware
October 15th, 2010 by Niels Horn in LibreOffice, Slackware | No Comments »
The Document Foundation released a binary tarball of the second beta version of LibreOffice 3.3.0
Packages for both the 32- and 64-bits versions are available on my site. Remember that it is still a beta release and is not recommended for production.
NVIDIA "Failed to allocate primary buffer" error
October 12th, 2010 by Niels Horn in Slackware, configuration, kernel | No Comments »
Yesterday I installed Slackware on a computer that came with a Debian-derivative installed. Nothing against Debian, but I'm more used to Slackware, and the hard drive had enough space left…
This box is an all "no-brand / low-price" system, but has very reasonable specs: Quad-core AMD GHz processor, 4GB memory, 400GB hard drive, NVIDIA 6150SE nForce [...]

This new version brings some essential changes to Snort that needed special attention.
