You might try to fix it with fsck, but it might not be worth the trouble and reinstalling might be faster. Slackware 1.2 started using the 1.0.0 Linux kernel, but it might compile on some versions before or shortly after that. On newer Linux distributions you won't be able to compile the older kernels, too many things have changed. The oldest source I have for XFree86 is 2.1 and that's from somewhere in 1994. :) No, I don’t have the sources for these older versions… The oldest source I have for XFree86 is 2.1 and that’s from somewhere in 1994. :)

I've only done the text mode install of SLS, I never bothered with the X11 stuff... I always recall it being such a major pain... Meanwhile I've been busy resurrecting 386BSD, and it seems all the xfree86-1.X releases are long gone... I don't suppose you happen to have source..? It seems that I was able to find a
"XFree86 Version 1.2 / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 5000) Configured drivers: VGA2 (monochrome VGA):"
Server so I guess my next best thing is to try to build X11R5 from source.. which thankfully is still around http://www.x.org/releases/X11R5/ ...
