Text that you mark is redacted when you create a redacted version of the document. You can mark individual keystrokes, words, or text strings for redaction or find and mark all their occurrences.

Mark selected item for redaction

  1. Select the item or text string that you want to redact.

Important To protect your redacted document against attempts to recover text that use word length strategies, avoid selecting single words for redaction.

  2. On the Review tab in the Redaction group, click Mark, and then click Mark.

Find and mark all occurrences of text

  1. On the Review tab, in the Redaction group, click Mark, and then click Find And Mark. The Redaction Find and Mark dialog box opens.
  2. In Text to find and mark, type the text you want to find.
  3. Click Find and Mark. All occurrences of the text are marked for redaction.

By default, objects marked for redaction are highlighted in gray. If marked objects are not shaded gray, on the Review tab, in the Redaction group, click Show Marks.

Note If you use the Microsoft Office Word Highlight tool on text that you mark for redaction, the redaction mark is not visible when you review the document on your computer. However, this text is redacted when you create the redacted version of the file.

Redaction removes confidential information from a document. To redact a document, you can download the Microsoft Office Word Redaction Add-in from the site.
