To work in certain languages in Microsoft Windows XP, some additional functionality must be installed if the language edition of Microsoft Windows is not the same as the language in which you want to work.

Enable input in Windows XP in East Asian languages (including Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean)

To create and edit text in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, you must first install the files for East Asian languages. These files include the Input Method Editor (IME) you need to work in these languages.

For more information on these files and how to make sure they are installed, do the following:

  1. Click Start, and then click Help and Support.
  2. Type east asian in the Search field, and then press ENTER.
  3. Click a topic in the Suggested Topics list.

Enable input in Windows XP in Southeast Asian languages (such as Thai), Indic languages, and right-to-left languages (such as Arabic)

Additional functionality must be installed to create and edit text in Arabic, Armenian, Georgian, Hebrew, the Indic languages, Thai, or Vietnamese. This functionality is known as the files for complex script and right-to-left languages.

For more information on these files and how to make sure they are installed, do the following:

  1. Click Start, and then click Help and Support.
  2. Type complex script in the Search field, and then press ENTER.
  3. Click a topic in the Suggested Topics list.
