By using a file format converter in Microsoft Office Word, you can open a document that was created in Microsoft Works. After you open the document, you can save it in Office Word format.

Note The File menu has been replaced with the Microsoft Office Button button image.

Save a Works document in Office Word format

  1. Click the Microsoft Office Button button image, and then click Open.
  2. In the Files of type list, click Works 6.0 - 9.0.

    If this option is not listed, you must install the file format converter.

    Do one of the following:

    showIn Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Server 2003

    1. Exit all programs.
    2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    3. In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a program.
    4. In the Currently installed programs list, click either 2007 Microsoft Office system or Microsoft Office Word (depending on whether you installed Word as part of Office or as an individual program), and then click Change.

      The Configuration Wizard opens.

    5. On the Maintenance Mode Options page, click Add or Remove Features, and then click Continue.
    6. On the Installation Options page, click the plus sign (+) next to Office Shared Features.
    7. Click the plus sign (+) next to Converters and Filters, and then click the plus sign (+) next to Text Converters.
    8. Click the arrow next to Works for Windows 7.0, and then click Run from My Computer.

      The file format converter is installed.

    showMicrosoft Windows Vista

    1. Exit all programs.
    2. Click the Start button button image, and then click Control Panel.
    3. In Control Panel, click Programs and then click Programs and Features.
    4. Right-click either 2007 Microsoft Office system or Microsoft Office Word (depending on whether you installed Word as part of Office or as an individual program), and then click Change.
    5. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Continue.
    6. On the Installation Options page, click the plus sign (+) next to Office Shared Features.
    7. Click the plus sign (+) next to Converters and Filters, and then click the plus sign (+) next to Text Converters.
    8. Click the arrow next to Works 7.0-9.0 Converter for Windows, and then click Run from My Computer.

      The file format converter is installed.

  3. In the Open dialog box, locate the file that you want to open, and then click it.
  4. Click Open.
  5. Click the Microsoft Office Button button image, and then click Save As.
  6. In the Save as type list, click Word document, and then click Save.
  7. In the File name box, type the file name that you want.
