Convert Works documents to Word format
By using a file format converter in Microsoft Office Word, you can open a document that was created in Microsoft Works. After you open the document, you can save it in Office Word format.
Note The File menu has been replaced with the Microsoft Office Button
.
Save a Works document in Office Word format
- Click the
Microsoft Office Button
, and then click
Open
. - In the
Files of type
list, clickWorks 6.0 - 9.0
.If this option is not listed, you must install the file format converter.
How?
Do one of the following:
In Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Server 2003
- Exit all programs.
- Click
Start
, and then clickControl Panel
. - In Control Panel, click
Add or Remove Programs
, and then clickRemove a program
. - In the
Currently installed programs
list, click either2007 Microsoft Office system
orMicrosoft Office Word
(depending on whether you installed Word as part of Office or as an individual program), and then clickChange
.The Configuration Wizard opens.
- On the
Maintenance Mode Options
page, clickAdd or Remove Features
, and then clickContinue
. - On the
Installation Options
page, click the plus sign (+) next toOffice Shared Features
. - Click the plus sign (+) next to
Converters and Filters
, and then click the plus sign (+) next toText Converters
. - Click the arrow next to
Works for Windows 7.0
, and then clickRun from My Computer
.The file format converter is installed.
Microsoft Windows Vista
- Exit all programs.
- Click the
Start
button, and then click
Control Panel
. - In Control Panel, click
Programs
and then clickPrograms and Features
. - Right-click either
2007 Microsoft Office system
orMicrosoft Office Word
(depending on whether you installed Word as part of Office or as an individual program), and then clickChange
. - Click

.The file format converter is installed.
- In the
Open
dialog box, locate the file that you want to open, and then click it. - Click
Open
. - Click the
Microsoft Office Button
, and then click
Save As
. - In the
Save as type
list, clickWord document
, and then clickSave
. - In the
File name
box, type the file name that you want.
