Automatically insert an arrow, face, or other symbol
When AutoCorrect is turned on, you can use the list of predefined AutoCorrect entries to automatically insert symbols - for example, arrows and faces.
Note If text is not replaced with a symbol, you may need to turn on the AutoCorrect feature.
The following procedures explain how to insert a symbol that is available in Microsoft Office Word, turn on AutoCorrect, and set up your own AutoCorrect entry. Insert a predefined symbol by using AutoCorrect
Type a predefined AutoCorrect entry that is in the following list, and watch Microsoft Office Word automatically replace it with the appropriate symbol. For example, type --> to insert .

Turn on AutoCorrect
- Click the
Microsoft Office Button
, and then click
Word Options
. - Click
Proofing
. - Under
AutoCorrect options
, clickAutoCorrect Options
, and then click theAutoCorrect
tab. - Select the
Replace text as you type
check box.
Set up your own AutoCorrect entry
To set up your own AutoCorrect entry, do the following:
- On the
Insert
tab, in theSymbols
group, clickSymbol
, and then clickMore Symbols
. - Click the
Symbols
tab or theSpecial Characters
tab. - Select the symbol or special character that you want to set up as an AutoCorrect entry.
- Click
AutoCorrect
.The symbol or character appears in the
With
box. - In the
Replace
box, type the text sequence that you want Word to automatically change to the symbol or character that you selected, such as \alpha. - Click
Add
. - Click
OK
. - Close the
Symbol
dialog box.
