Ignore and Watch Threads
Previous Microplanet Gravity Next |
These commands are similar in operation, although they have quite different functions.
· The keyboard commands are easy to remember (W and I), but you can use the toolbar buttons.
· These commands act on entire threads. When you issue the command, the entire thread will be flagged.
· The Watch and Ignore Thread commands are toggles. You can add/remove threads to either list simply by selecting any *one* article in the thread and using the same command (W or I) again.
· Gravity will automatically apply these rules to current and incoming articles in the thread until the list entry expires.
· These are Standard rules, which will appear in your rule list after first use. If you do not see them in Tools - Rules, use the command once and it will appear.
· You can add to either list with a rule, or use the status in a display filter.
Ignore Thread (I)
Adds the thread topic to the Ignore List, flags it with the ignore icon, and marks the article as read. Future incoming articles in the thread will be marked read and ignored until expiration.
Watch Thread (W)
Adds the thread to the watch list, flags articles with the watched icon, and automatically downloads the article body (unless you edited the rule). Future incoming articles will be added to the list and handled the same. Instead of ignoring articles, this is used to flag them as something you want to see.
View the Watch/Ignore Lists and Settings
View - Other Windows - Watch(Ignore) List
These windows show the actual list of all the currently watched or ignored threads. You can remove threads that are being ignored or watched and set two settings. It also shows the days since the thread has been seen.
Settings:
· The first setting controls how long after articles of a thread stop appearing before Gravity automatically stops looking for them (i.e. removes them from the Watch or Ignore List).
· The second setting controls whether Gravity treats articles with the same subject as belonging in the same thread when looking for articles.
You really only need to access the lists to change or view settings. You can remove the "Watched" or "Ignore" status of the thread from the main display simply by selecting any one article in the thread and using the same command (W or I) again. This is faster than opening the actual list dialog to remove the thread from the list.
TipYou can also use the Watch Thread command to fetch or tag all the articles bodies in a thread without adding to the Watch List permanently. Be aware this happens immediately (if online) unlike tagging.
1. Press W, the thread is added to the List and Gravity starts downloading the article bodies. If you are off-line, Gravity will tag the articles for download.
2. Press W again, and the thread is removed from the watch thread list automatically. If tagged, the tags remain.
Using Rules to Add to the Watch/Ignore Lists
You can use a rule condition to add articles to these lists automatically. However, there is a difference. Rather than flagging and acting on all article in the thread, the rule flags the current article and watches/ignores from this point forward. In other words, older articles will not be flagged.
Ø If you want to "refresh" the W/I Lists and flag all existing articles - you can run the rule(s) manually
Using Display Filters for Watched/Ignored Threads
You can filter these articles by using Advanced Filters .
In a watched thread
You can also combine conditions to show important articles based on multiple criteria, like this:
In a watched thread Or Score > 100 Or Subject contains "Gravity"
You may notice there are two advanced conditions pertaining to watched/ignored articles. One is the article is in the “Watch” or “Ignore” list. This means the article subject matches the Lists subjects, viewed with View - Other Windows.
The other is the article is marked as “read,” “important,” “tagged, watched, ignored” etc. This means the article is flagged with the Watched or Ignored
icon. You can use both conditions if you want.
Optional Notes for Advanced Users
The Standard Watch and Ignore Thread rules can be edited.
For example, you can add positive scores to watched articles. Watched threads will appear higher in the article list, of sorting by score. Or you could even set the watch thread rule to not download article bodies automatically.
