Basic Decoding Concepts

You do not "read" an article to decode a binary attachment. If you read the article, you see the encoded text, which resembles a lot of jibberish.
Instead, you will use the "Decode" or "View" commands.

·      Use the Decode or View commands for decoding binaries. The View command will launch the attachment. The Decode command decodes the attachment and places it in the download folder, specified in Global Options.

·      Open the Image Factory to view or adjust the download queue; or to view, delete, or rename decoded files.

·      You (usually) only need to select one part of a multi-part attachment to decode it.

·      You can create your own "Complete Binaries" filters.

·      You can send multiple articles to the download queue at once (in batches).

·      By default, decoded attachments are placed in the directory set in Global Options - Decoding. You can change this directory. Note that in Gravity versions before 2.9.1, in Windows Vista, these may be Vista's User store. In Windows XP, they go into "C:\Documents and Settings \ USER \ Application Data \ Gravity \ Download."

·      You can override the download directory for specific newsgroups in Newsgroup - Properties, or use the "Decode to.." command.

·      When you view an attachment, the registry associated viewer for that file type will launch it. You can configure an alternate viewer in Global Options - Decoding.

·      Gravity is configured by default so that it will not launch dangerous files (like *.exe files). These are configured in Tools - Global Options - Warnings

·      If a decode job fails because of a lost connection, it is added back to the waiting job queue. Individual parts of multi-part attachments are stored temporarily in the \parts directory, until the decoding is complete. This way you do not have to re-download parts already fetched.

·      See Global Options - Decoding for most decoding settings.
